stated that the possible effect of the removal of tax exempt status just for Southern Baptist Convention churches alone over their refusal to perform same sex marriages would be devastating to their mission and it´s cultural moral footprint in America: " Adding property taxes to the church’s annual expenses would close hundreds, maybe thousands, of tiny SBC churches".
And why is this even an issue if Justice Anthony Kennedy stated in his majority opinion that religious adherents “may continue to advocate with utmost sincere conviction that, by divine precepts, same-sex marriage should not be condoned.”? This concern is valid as Obama´s point man in this court battle-Solicitor General Donald Verrilli-was asked during oral arguments whether, (as in the case with Bob Jones University that banned interracial dating & marriage) a college that opposed same-sex marriage could be denied tax-exempt status. “It’s certainly going to be an issue,” Verrilli stated and added. “I don’t deny that.”
